Pilot explains why every plane window has tiny holes

A pilot has explained why each plane window has tiny holes in it and how they help to both keep the passengers safe, but also improve the view out of the side of the jet

As the year progresses from spring to summer, many people will be planning their summer holidays around the world.

When they settle into their seat on an aircraft they may choose to look out of the planes’ windows. As they do they may notice little holes in the window.

Now, a pilot has explained why those holes are there. Those holes are part of regulating pressure inside the aircraft as plane windows are not made up of one layer, but three.

These three layers, and the holes in the middle layer, help to make the aircraft safer for passengers to fly in, they are known as ‘breather holes’ or ‘bleed holes’.

Taking to YouTube one user, known as Mentour Pilot, explained that the bleeder holes are in the middle of the three layers of plane windows, reports UniLad.

He said that the outer of the three layers, that closes to the elements, was there to “handle impact and pressure difference”. However, between that layer and the middle layer, there is a pocket of air.

These bleed holes help to regular the pressure across the three layers and to make sure the forces don’t build. He explained: “Differences in pressure and temperature would otherwise start causing forces to build up between the layers, trying to bend them inwards or outwards.

“That little hole is put there to allow air to flow through slowly and relieve that potential pressure difference.”

However, if you look closely, the layer closest to the passengers doesn’t have that hole, but the pilot said this is because this layer is designed to allow air to flow around the layer.

Furthermore, the pilot explained the other reason why plane windows have holes in them is also to reduce the likelihood of moisture build-up.

He said: “It makes it more difficult for moisture to become trapped between the layers, and start fogging up your window.”

This pilot isn’t the only one to have to talked about some of the rituals and secrets behind modern airlines with some flight attendants providing information about why certain actions are taken, including why they say hello passengers as they get on board.

One has explained why they always greet passengers when they get on board, and it’s not just out of politeness.

Taking to TikTok flight attendant Mrs Miva said it was also a way for them to check the health of the passengers as they boarded. It’s also a way for them to make a safety evaluation of the flight at the same time before the aircraft takes off.

She explained: “Did you know that your flight attendant greets you not only out of politeness, but also to check whether you are too drunk or sick to fly?”
